Japan International Graduate Program 2009

International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (lGPAS)-Application deadline is January 31, 2009.

International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS) is an interdisciplinary graduate program in the Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University.

It was established in October 2004 as the first international graduate program founded in Japanese national universities. IGPAS offers courses in English for international students who are eager to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Science. It is also aims to educate Japanese students to exert their abilities as internationally-active, professional scientists.
IGPAS has proudly reserved positions of Japanese government scholarship for its master’s students since its foundation, and in 2008, IGPAS-Super Doctoral Course (SDC) has been started for doctoral students jointly with the Institute for the International Advanced Research and Education (IIARE) of Tohoku University. Students of IGPAS-SDC benefit from fellowship by IIARE to promote world top-level, interdisciplinary research at the Graduate School of Science.

Prospective students will have excellent opportunities to study modern science and conduct cutting-edge research with top-level scientists currently working at Tohoku University.

IGPAS is a 5-year graduate program as the combination of a 2-year master’s program and a 3-year doctoral program. In the interdisciplinary program, students are affiliated to one of six departments in three groups based on the GCOE programs: (i) Chemistry, (ii) Mathematics, Astronomy, and Physics, and (iii) Earth Science and Geophysics.

The academic year of IGPAS starts in October. The Graduate School of Science will admit at most 20 students each for the master’s and doctoral programs for IGPAS 2009.

As of December, 2008, availability of financial supports for IGPAS 2009 students is as shown below. See 7. FINANCIAL SUPPORT of the appplication booklet for the eligibility requirements.

Master’s Program
Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship for 8 students
by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT; Monbukagakusho)

? Monthly stipend of 170,000 yen/month for the first year and 160,000 yen for the following years
? Flight tickets between the country of the student’s nationality and Japan
?Exemption from application, admission and tuition fees.

Doctoral Program
IGPAS-SDC fellowship for 2 students
by the Institute of International Advanced Research and Education (IIARE), Tohoku University

  • Monthly stipend of 200,000 yen/month
  • 300,000 yen to compensate for admission fee
  • 250,000 yen/semester to compensate for tuition
  • Research grants of up to 500,000 yen/semester (up to 1,000,000 yen/year)

Shell Centenary Scholarships and Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships

A scholarship application should accompany, or follow, a University Graduate Entry Application.
A scholarship application will not be considered unless and until the applicant has received an offer from Imperial College London to undertake an eligible programme of postgraduate study by 31st March 2009 (an application for academic admission must have been made by 31st January 2009).

Applicants must personally complete this form by entering the information requested in the appropriate blocks.

A fully-completed scholarship application form must reach the University by 1 March 2009.

Applicants should normally be:

  • aged 35 or under
  • nationals of and resident in any country other than Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States and intending to return and take up permanent residence there after completion of the proposed programme of study
  • intending to study a subject that will be of significant value in aiding the sustainable development of their home country
  • of outstanding academic ability, e.g. have obtained a degree equivalent to a first class honours degree at a British university
  • fluent in spoken and written English
  • neither a current nor former employee of the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies

It is the intention that the scholarships be widely geographically distributed. In each year a large number of countries will be represented. Scholarships will be awarded to those academically qualified applicants thought best able to contribute to the development of their home country by becoming leaders, decision-makers or opinion-formers. Preference will be given to those who have not yet had the opportunity to study in the UK and NL.


Each scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, maintenance cost and a return airfare for the scholarship holder only.

Please note that an applicant must have met all the conditions for academic entry, including the university’s English language requirements before they can compete for a scholarship.

Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) Master and Doctoral Scholarships 2009 at School of International Health The University of T

School of International Health, The University of Tokyo offers advanced study and research opportunities under the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) for oversea students from ADB member countries. Applicants for this program must have a citizenship or nationality of a developing country among the ADB member countries. The ADB-JSP at our school is designated for the Masters and Doctors Program that usually lasts for two years (for Mastes) and three years (for Doctors) and commences on 1st April every year. Language used in the program is English.

Overview

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
The applicants are evaluated by the School Committee and distinguished applicants are nominated as candidates for the program and subsequently recommended to the Asian Development Bank. Admission to the ADB-JSP is finally granted for about five applicants by the Graduate Council of the University of Tokyo based on the recommendation of School of International Health and approval of ADB.

The University of Tokyo maintains an extremely high academic standard with a limited number of students. Admission to the program is very competitive, thus outstanding applicants are expected to apply.

To be eligible for admission to this program, applicants:
1. must be a citizen or national of an ADB member country listed above;
2. must have finished at least 18 years of school education (except language education);
3. must hold a degree from an accredited institution that is comparable to the Master Degree awarded by the University of Tokyo;
4. must have working experience for at least two years in the field of health/medical science;
5. must be aged below 35 years;
6. must not be military personnel;
7. must be able to arrive in Japan between 1st and 10th of April, 2010
8. must agree to return to his/her home country after completion of studies under the Program;
9. must not be living or working in a country other than his/her home country;

* *IMPORTANT: The duration of scholarship is only TWO years although Doctors program lasts for three years.

There is no guarantee that you can take another scholarship for the third year.
* *Applicants already have studied abroad have lesser priority.

SCHEDULE
- Deadline for application (All the documents must be submitted): 31stMay, 2009
- Notification of preliminary selection by the School Committee: 31stJuly, 2009
- Notification of final selection by the Asian Development Bank: 31stOctober, 2009

* Notification will be made as early as possible after completion of the selection process.

FINANCIAL AID
The ADB-JSP scholarship covers admission and tuition fees, subsistence allowance (minimum 150,000 yen per month), economy class airfare and other expenditures including medical/accident insurance.
